Scaling And Root Planing

Deep cleaning treatment that removes plaque and tartar from beneath the gum line to treat early-stage gum disease and help your gums heal and reattach properly.

What Is Scaling and Root Planing?

Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning treatment we use during the early stages of periodontal disease to remove plaque and tartar that has built up beneath the gum line. This procedure helps prevent gum disease from progressing to a more advanced stage, and can improve the quality of your tissue before surgery if needed.

The Scaling and Root Planing Procedure

The treatment involves two main steps:

Scaling — We use a special instrument called a scaler to gently scrape away plaque and tartar that has built up beneath your gums. Plaque often develops in pockets that form between your teeth and gums. As gum disease progresses, these pockets grow deeper, which may eventually cause teeth to loosen and fall out if left untreated.

Root Planing — After scaling removes the buildup, the treated area is rough and uneven. Root planing smooths the root surface of your tooth so that your gums can heal properly and reattach to the tooth.

What to Expect

We can use anesthesia or sedation during this procedure to keep you comfortable. Antibiotics or antimicrobial irrigation may be prescribed to help prevent bacteria from growing in your mouth after treatment.

There is little to no pain associated with this procedure, and you can resume your regular activities immediately afterward. We may prescribe medication to address any post-treatment discomfort.

After your scaling and root planing procedure, practicing proper oral hygiene at home is essential to prevent pockets from reforming and to maintain your gum health.
